Marrakech Flair
Marrakech is often said to awaken every one of the senses. The city dazzles with its intricate zellige tilework, the fragrance of spices drifting through the souks, the call to prayer echoing from nearby mosques, the feel of supple leather crafted into babouches, and the taste of a richly spiced tagine. Tucked just west of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech has been home to Berber farmers for centuries. Nicknamed the “Ochre City” for its abundance of red sandstone buildings and the crimson walls surrounding the Medina, it is also the site of Jemaa el-Fnaa, one of Africa’s liveliest public squares.
Overflowing with culture, Marrakech has inspired visitors for generations. Icons from Yves Saint Laurent and Talitha Getty to Winston Churchill and Mick Jagger have all been captivated by its enduring spirit and vibrant beauty. Saint Laurent’s deep affection for the city even resulted in a museum dedicated to his legendary work. The annual Marrakech International Film Festival draws global attention, while the city’s many museums showcase Moroccan art, photography, carpets, and the Andalusian influences woven throughout its architecture. The historic La Mamounia hotel, opened in 1923, has welcomed illustrious guests including Churchill, while Vanessa Branson’s El Fenn transforms a series of traditional riads into a stunning boutique hotel. There are countless ways to immerse yourself in Marrakech’s culture—but perhaps the most perfect beginning is simply a glass of mint tea.
